NYC overnight rate for nanny
our nanny is going to spend the night for the first time and i’m not sure how to compensate her. she said “anything i feel is appropriate” works for her but would love to make sure it’s a market rate. how do you typically pay when a nanny spends the night?
she usually works until 5:30pm and our daughter goes to bed at 7:30. in the past when she babysits we pay her the full rate until she goes home.

We’ve typically done a flat rate of $100 for overnight on top of the normal hours worked plus the hourly rate for extra hours in the evening/morning.

Second Ethan’s note above. We do the same - 100 for overnights, but make sure to include additional hours are paid. Just be clear in your contract on when overnight starts, eg is it at 730 or is it at 1030 etc

do either of you use bedtime or like a different time? we didn’t align on this in our contract and our nanny really doesn’t have a strong preference but we want to show we appreciate her so was thinking we’d do 830pm (730 is bedtime) and then 125 or 150

We use bedtime which is 8 pm and wake-up which is usually 8 am. We also provide dinner via Seamless and breakfast with whatever is in fridge/pantry. Our experience is that there aren’t any hard and fast rules and as long as you can get to a place where both parties are satisfied, you’re good. Our nanny has adult children so staying overnight isn’t a huge sacrifice personal sacrifice for her but I could see a world where a single parent with young kids would command greater pay to compensate for the hardship.

totally agreed — thanks! we’re in a similar situation — adult children and she’s happy to do it but we don’t want to ask too much and ensure we are paying her well for these maybeee 2-5 times a year she does it!
