6 year old suddenly embarrassed to hug me in public??
So my 6yo has always been super affectionate but this week he pulled away when I tried to hug him after school and said “not here mom.” It honestly broke my heart a little. Is this normal for this age? I want to respect his feelings but also don’t want him to feel like affection is something to be embarrassed about. How do you walk that line? I always knew this was going to happened but didn’t expect it so soon.

Omg I’ve dealt with this too. He doesn’t always not want my hugs in public but I’ll admit it’s more than I’d like, lol. We started doing fist bumps in public when he doesn’t want to give hugs & it makes him feel like I’m cool. Which I guess is also a win. Maybe you can come up with another form of affection too? Time is for sure a thief & it’s so hard when our little ones are growing up 🥹

This is so rough, my 7 year old boy does the same! I try not to take it personally because he’s still the same kid when it’s just us / around family / often around his friends too - so I think it’s just not wanting to seem ‘uncool’ generally (bc while he loves me, I am def not cool to him) and those first signs of feeling self conscious around their own independence… so hard when they still feel like your baby!
