Basic stroller advice
We are expecting and thus totally new to the stroller market. We’d like something city-friendly— not excessively bulky/heavy but still durable. Any recommendations? And anything you thought was necessary and turned out not to be so (like tons of storage space)?

So exciting!!! Congratulations ❤️ I feel like with city living you end up getting multiple strollers over time the first few years so just prep yourself for that.
  • BabyZen is a great city option that has great accessories that help you evolve through the stages. The con are the wheels which are a bit weak when pushing through snow (if we ever get any!) or on grass (when mtg that playdate). It's a wonderful travel stroller too and folds nicely for overhead.
  • we are also big fans of the Bugaboo which we've had the same one for 9yrs now (with kid #3!). The version we have doesn't fold so "stroller parking" is something to consider.
One not listed here is the Doona which is a very versatile stroller for the first year that easily converts into a car seat . Con is they grow out of it pretty fast. Best of luck and let us know what you end up going with and why!

When we had our first, we had a YoYo with the car seat adapters and Doona car seat on top. We didn’t get the bassinet for the YoYo. So during the early days we’d push the baby in the stroller and he’d be sitting in the car seat. When he got a little bigger, we just got rid of the car seat. We have no regrets about the set up. Everything Swati said is true about the wheels sometimes being a bit wobbly but 95% of the time it’s great. The other thing I’d mention is that it’s really low profile which is awesome for apartment living or just going on walks and not feeling like you’re driving around a stretch hummer on a narrow residential street. We now have a much bigger stroller for two kids (we still use the YoYo) and it’s much smoother that the YoYo with the bumps but it feels like a tank (to keep the metaphor going) Good luck!

Forgot to mention that it’s great for the subway. For stations without elevators, I could easily pick up the YoYo with the baby in it and go down steps (although my wife wouldn’t do this). For our bigger one, that’s definitely not possible.

Our baby is 3 months old and we have both the Doona and the uppababy vista 2. The Doona was essential for getting her home from hospital and for short trips in the neighborhood. I haven't tried it on subway or bus yet but it's pretty easy to maneuver. Everyone in our neighborhood has the uppababy like us, I really like it because it's super durable and I use the bassinet as a living room napping bassinet (have to buy the bassinet stand accessory separately) but it's so nice to use it for other purposes. Our baby naps really well in it.

Thanks everyone. Incredibly helpful to hear your experiences. @ethan do you feel like the YoYo could substitute for a travel stroller (meaning you can rely on just one stroller instead of two)?

You can definitely travel with the YoYo. We took ours to London twice and wouldn’t ever travel with the larger stroller. It folds compactly and if you pre-board you can put it in the overhead bin. We’ve used the car seat attachment (not the bassinet) and you typical need to gate check the car seat. So to do that we got a travel bag for the car seat. Until we had two kids, this was the only stroller we had. Overall felt like it did everything we wanted: was durable, folded well, could travel with it, didn’t take up too much space in a space constrained NYC living environment. But when we had two kids we needed to upgrade to something bigger. But we still prefer to use it when traveling or just going out with one kid.

Hey@Sam Khanna
  • another good option if you want one that can sub for both travel and city life is the Bugaboo Butterfly. Very similar to the YoYo. You can get adapters to clip on your car seat and/or an infant insert for the early months.
I prefer this option to getting a doona AND a regular stroller, bc I felt the doona wouldn’t last me but that’s just personal preference. We actually got the Nuna MIXX for the city and bugaboo for travel. The Nuna is amazing on city streets, bumps and cracks. Then we use the bugaboo for travel, but you could definitely double up.

1/ I had the Uppababy Cruz which is a sturdy stroller for the city and all accessories fit it - like the 7 am infant for winter 2/ Bought bugaboo butterfly which is a lightweight stroller for travel and graduated to it once my daughter turned 2 since it is easier to navigate in the city
