Babies in the Texas summer heat
I am traveling to Texas in June to visit my in‑laws with my 4‑month‑old daughter and already worried about the intense heat. Summers there reach triple‑digit highs and the sun is relentless. Since babies under six months should not wear sunscreen I do not know how to keep her safe outdoors. Does that mean we have to stay indoors the whole time? Even early morning walks feel uncomfortably bright. I have heard that draping blankets over the stroller or car seat just turns it into a mini sauna. I may be overthinking it but what are your best tips for sun protection when long sleeves and pants are not realistic in such scorching weather? Thank you!

Our baby was born in the Colorado summer where it’s bright and high, and we were having weeks of heat waves in her early months. We also did a lot of the things Paper Plane suggested: stroller canopy, light long-sleeved clothes, shade and time of day. Sometimes walks were shorter if she was getting uncomfortable or started to look a little rosy. We were outside less than we would’ve otherwise liked. But combining safety measures and making some compromises, we got through it.

Thanks@MP Diaz-Frasene! This probably means just a lot more inside time with AC than I would like. But I guess these are the compromises we make. Was hoping to be able to use walks as a needed escape form the in-laws. 🫠

Yeah@Billie L, that can be a drag! I’m hopeful you won’t need to be inside the whooole time, and if you’re anything like me, even a short loop in the neighborhood can be a respite.
I had a friend who did a lot of stroller walks in, like, IKEA and Target just to gtfo of the house. Not ideal, but maybe you can come up with some other errands. 😉 Good luck!
