After work is the worst
I’ve got two kids under 3 and I rush home from work to relieve the nanny by 630. Bed time usually starts at 730 so I have an hour of unstructured time when everyone is in a bad mood. I love my kids, don’t get me wrong, but they are super cranky by the end of the day, I’m exhausted, and I’m still distracted by my phone and the tasks I didn’t get to complete at work. While I should be enjoying my hour with the kids, I just find it unpleasant and stressful. And then I feel bad when they go to bed that I didn’t take advantage of the time. Does anyone else feel this way? How do I break this trap?

I often find myself stressed when my attention is divided between my 3.5 year old son and the other tasks I want to complete. He definitely picks up on my divided attention, and it takes me twice as long to complete the other tasks I was working on. I now do my best to put my phone away in the evenings, and focus on him. He craves connection and focus and spirals when he picks up on my distraction. Can you consider putting your phone away/on silent until the kids are in bed? What do you think is contributing to end of day crankiness? Hunger? Exhaustion? We had a similar situation and I started following a Dr Becky hack- she suggested feeding kids dinner earlier- maybe 5/5:30 when they’re asking for a variety of snacks. Getting some protein into them earlier helps with those cranky crashes, and then they can have lighter snacks before bed.
