Surprise huge medical bills for childbirth
We received multiple multi-thousand dollar bills for our recent birth at an NYC hospital. I know folks don’t know the specifics of our insurance, but did you encounter something similar? We did not get any of the “extras,” just the basic post-partum care that was offered. If so, were you successful in fighting it?

Payment plans and financial assistance are solutions I have heard. I would start with insurance and then hospital.

I have had this issue. Insurance was no help to me but the hospital billing department helped me out a bit. Its worth a try I would say.

Did the hospital give you a line item bill? If not definitely ask for one so that you can go line item by line item and see if things make sense and whether it’s worth disputing. Also, were there any complex procedures or complications around delivery that could have driven up the cost?

She did have a C-section but interestingly 75% of the bill was due to the stay at the post partum!
